PREAH VIHEAR – Women are playing a key role in conserving natural resources in Sambo Aphivath community protected area in Preah Vihear province despite challenges related to their gender and threats from poachers.

The community of 642 members, including 337 women, is in Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary in Kulen district.

Bouch Nuth, a community member and cashier, said she dedicates her time and efforts to patrolling the area to prevent environmental crimes.

“As a female patroller, I have encountered threats from poachers and been underestimated by others. However, my passion for the forest and wildlife as well as my commitment to future generations keep me motivated to continue this work,” she said.

Nuth said their conservation aefforts are voluntary and she often covers her own expenses for travel to the forest. Sometimes, they get financial support from donors.

She said each patrol has up to 20 people, with five to ten of them being women.

Over time, Nuth has seen an increase in wildlife and a decline in animal traps and hunting. Her team also plants trees in open areas to provide shelter for animals.

Established in 2012, the community spans 1,071 hectares and is home to 172 households. The initiative aims to promote the sustainable use and management of natural resources while enhancing the livelihoods of local communities.

The community has planted and nurtured thousands of trees across 60 hectares. Members patrol regularly to protect trees and monitor the growth of newly planted saplings.
